Profile of Toshiko Taira
1921–2022, a dyer and weaver from the Showa and Heisei eras.
Born February 14, Taisho 10 (1921). With advice from Soichiro Ohara and Yoshinosuke Tonomura,
he re-recognized the value of Okinawan crafts, and
returned to his hometown in Showa 21, working on the revival of Bashō fabric (bashōfu), which was on the verge of extinction in Ōgimi Village, Okinawa Prefecture.
He served as the representative of the Kijoka Bashō Fabric Preservation Society, designated as an Important Intangible Cultural Asset in 1974, and is from Kijoka, Okinawa.
In 1974, Bashō fabric from Kijoka, Ōgimi Village, Okinawa Prefecture, was designated as an Important Intangible Cultural Asset by the government. He served as the representative of the Kijoka Bashō Fabric Preservation Society, which was recognized as a maintaining organization.
In Heisei 12 (2000), he was designated as a Living National Treasure for Bashō fabric.

Bashō fabric is a cloth woven using fibers extracted from the perennial grass Ito-bashō of the Bashō family, also known as Bashōsha.
It is a traditional craft product of Okinawa and the Amami Islands, and due to its thin and firm texture, it is used for summer kimono, mosquito nets, cushions, and more.
In 1974, Bashō fabric from Kijoka, Okinawa, was designated as an Important Intangible Cultural Asset by the national government.
It is one of Okinawa’s representative traditional crafts.
Thanks to the efforts of Toshiko Taira, the technique of Bashō fabric, which had been interrupted by war, was revived and designated as an Important Intangible Cultural Asset.
Currently, Kijoka in Ōgimi Village is the only production area, and it is a highly valuable, rare, and top-grade product that is difficult to obtain on the market.
It is an extremely high-quality, exquisite item.

植えつけから３年、糸芭蕉が大きく育ち、
人の身長をはるかにしのぐようになると、
ようやく繊維の材料として利用できます。
その間幾度の暴風雨に耐え、どっしりと大地に根を張った糸芭蕉だからこそ、
上質の繊維が採れるのです。
着尺一反を織るためには、糸芭蕉の木を約二百本切り倒します。
それから布になるまで、大きく分けても二十余りの工程があり、
およそ半年かけて、一反の着尺が織りあがります。
さらっとした手触り、生成りの自然な色合い。
想いをこめて織り継がれてきた芭蕉布は、
沖縄を代表する伝統工芸の一つです。

芭蕉布は、沖縄が世界に誇る伝統工芸品です。
人間国宝 平良敏子さんの尽力により、
戦争で途絶えた芭蕉布の技法が復興され
「重要無形文化財」に国指定されるまでになりました。
現在では、 大宜味村 喜如嘉 が唯一の産地となっており、
市場では なかなか手に入らない貴重価値の高く
超希少な最高級品になります。
