History of Bingata
Bingata, which originated during the Ryukyu Kingdom era, is made using a dyeing technique called stencil dyeing only.
Its expressive diversity is unique and holds a special position among dyed products.
Using rice glue as a resist agent, the dyeing technique of Bingata with pigments and dyes
was established by the mid-18th century, and was worn mainly by royalty, nobility, and samurai, among others,
creating a unique world of Ryukyu Bingata.
The beauty of Bingata, especially, combined with Okinawa’s aesthetic sense of "Chura" (purity),
caused Yanagi Muneyoshi to exclaim in his book "Ryukyu no Tomi" as follows.
"No women from any country have worn more splendid garments than Okinawa’s 'Bingata'.
Especially in tropical Okinawa, it was very fitting.
It harmonized with the vivid reds and greens of nature, blooming like flowers in full display."
However, with the Meiji Restoration and the collapse of the royal court, Bingata lost its backing and rapidly declined.
Furthermore, during the last war, the only ground combat destroyed everything,
destroying both the people who produced Bingata and the tools used.
Bingata was forced to restart from below zero.
The process of making Bingata can be broadly divided into 11 steps.
Design drawing, stencil carving, stencil placement, color application, shading, steaming, water removal, rice glue fixation, base dyeing, steaming, water removal, and organization.
The number can increase infinitely if broken down further, but each step is handmade, ignoring economic efficiency.
The collection of advanced dyeing techniques and a variety of colors is what makes Bingata.
Effective use of shading techniques centered around the shading process.
Rainbow shading… uses blurring techniques to contrast strongly individual colors smoothly.
Ink shading… utilizes the differences in concentration and patterns to blur and add movement to the overall design.
Oboro shading… involves two-layer stencils. Oboro can also be considered a type of blurring. It reduces the saturation of the base pattern,
adding depth to the main stencil to make the pattern stand out.
Eba shading… applies partial blurring to komon (fine pattern) patterns.
This is a very high-quality, exquisite piece.
