400 years ago, the wife wove a hemp cloth called 'Joufu' to honor her husband's achievements recognized by the Ryukyu Kingdom,
and as a token of gratitude, presented it to the king, which is considered the beginning of Miyako Jofu.
It is full of elegant dignity and was designated as an Important Intangible Cultural Property of the country in Showa 53 (1978).

Miyako Jofu begins with thread making,
carefully cultivating the hemp fibers and splitting them finely using fingers or nails,
then skillfully twisting and spinning them into yarn, following a pattern for kasuri tying,
dyed with natural dyes such as indigo and fukugi, and carefully handwoven.
The finishing process called "washing," including starching and pounding with a mallet (kinuta-uchi),
makes it a supreme handmade product.
It is extremely lightweight, with wonderful elasticity and luster, resulting in a superb item.
The cool, exceptional feel on the skin is Miyako Jofu.
Even skilled artisans can only weave about 30cm per day in intricate kasuri patterns,
with elegant and beautiful overlapping hana-bishi (flower diamond) motifs woven into a deep indigo background.

carefully woven starting from cultivating the hemp.
