A wife wove a jōfu (hemp cloth) for her husband, and as a token of gratitude, presented it to the king, which is said to be the beginning of Miyako jōfu.
It is filled with high-class dignity and elegance.
In 1978 (Showa 53), it was designated as an Important Intangible Cultural Property of the country.
It has a rustic warmth inherent to hand-spun, and an exceptional suppleness that is hard to believe it is hemp,

as well as a resilient firmness.
The ultimate longing, one of Japan’s four great jōfu, "Miyako jōfu."
Miyako jōfu begins with the process of making the thread,

carefully tearing the cultivated ramie fibers using fingers and nails,
then skillfully twisting and spinning them into yarn by hand, following a pattern, and dyeing with natural dyes such as indigo and fuki (Japanese sophora), then carefully hand-weaving.
The finishing process called "sentaku" (washing), including starching and kinuta (wooden hammer) pounding, is performed, making it a supreme handmade product.
It is very lightweight, with excellent elasticity and luster.
The cool, exceptional feel is unique to Miyako jōfu.
Even skilled artisans only weave about 30cm per day in intricate kasuri (ikat) patterns.

It features an elegant and beautiful kasuri pattern of overlapping hana-bishi (flower diamond) motifs on a deep indigo background.
A beautiful piece born from the blessings of nature and human effort, carefully woven starting from cultivating ramie.
