Heian Bukyu Work, Toyotomi Hideyoshi, Ichinotani Urashima Crest Helmet, Copper Hammered Finish, Kyoto Highest Grade Akebono Lacquer Karahitsu, May Doll, Kyoto Armor, 5th Month Doll, Satsuki Doll, Helmet and Armor Display, Armor and Helmet Display, 10000424
Tens of thousands of May dolls, armor, and helmets are manufactured nationwide each year. The proportion of Bukyu's armor and helmets among them is minuscule. We wish for the spirit of Japan and traditional craftsmanship to be known more widely, and it is with regret that this is not the case. However, the techniques passed down through generations at Bukyu cannot possibly be expressed through mass production by machines. For warlords of turbulent times, armor was not only a weapon but also an object of faith, wishing for the prosperity of descendants and military achievements. Embracing this spirit, armor makers, with pride equal to that of the samurai, took on the challenge of creation. In that sense, creating masterpieces can be said to reflect the hearts of great generals in the present day. This, too, is something that machines can never express. We promise that Bukyu will continue to create masterpieces. With the pride of a Kyoto armor maker.
- Heian Bukyu (へいあん ぶきゅう) -"Bukyu" is one of the three major brands of Kyoto armor makers, alongside Issui and Awataguchi Kiyonobu. The second generation, Juichi Saji, was born in Kyoto as the eldest son of the first generation Heian Bukyu (Hisaburo Saji) and his wife, the first generation Tomohisa (a recipient of the Kyoto City Traditional Craftsman Award). After learning traditional techniques and spirit, he succeeded to the name of the second generation Heian Bukyu in 1973. His activities after succeeding to the name were truly worthy of the name Heian Bukyu. He was appointed director of the Kyoto Doll Manufacturers Association in 1985 and chairman of the Kyoto Doll Manufacturers Cooperative Association in 1991. In 2008, he was awarded the Order of the Rising Sun, Gold Rays with Rosette, becoming a prominent figure in the Kyoto armor world in both name and reality. Subsequently, the traditional techniques were passed down to the third generation, Mr. Tetsuya Saji. His techniques exude the profoundness unique to Kyoto-made items, fully embodying the luxury of authentic Kyoto armor.
