The Kiha 85 series has been active for over 30 years as JR Central's representative limited express train.The HC85 series, as its successor, began operation on the Limited Express "Hida" in 2022."HC" in the vehicle model stands for "Hybrid Car."It uses electricity generated by a diesel engine to drive the motors, and during deceleration, the regenerated power is charged into a battery and used during starting and acceleration.The HC85 series, which combines the characteristics of diesel cars and electric trains and has high running performance, is the first limited express train in Japan to achieve a maximum speed of 120 km/h as a hybrid vehicle.This work features a ride on the 8-car HC85 series Limited Express "Hida" No. 3.Departing from Nagoya, the largest terminal station in the Tokai region.Utilizing both the diesel engine and motors, it heads towards Gifu on the Tokaido Main Line, running alongside and crossing the Meitetsu Line and freight lines under a clear blue sky.From Gifu, the direction of travel changes, and it enters the Takayama Main Line, which celebrated its 90th anniversary in 2024.The Takayama Main Line, which is entirely single-track and non-electrified, is famous for its scenic views along the Hida River.From Takayama, the rear four cars are detached, forming a four-car formation, and it runs swiftly through the mountainous areas of the Chubu region.From Inotani, it enters the JR West Japan section and heads towards the final destination, Toyama.The next-generation limited express train, the HC85 series Limited Express "Hida," which combines high running performance with reduced environmental impact, races through the Tokaido Main Line and Takayama Main Line.
