Kobo Shokudo Co., Ltd. was founded in 1850 (Kaei 3) and is based in Awaji Island, Hyogo Prefecture, selling incense and incense sticks.
Incense sticks are closely related to Japanese culture, climate, and national character.
And, in order to contribute to the development of fragrance culture, we challenge technological innovation, utilize traditional techniques, and develop products that focus on natural ingredients, health, and convenience.
The townscape of Eiji, selected as one of the Ministry of the Environment's "Fragrance Landscape 100 Selections," has a charming atmosphere.
Walking through the town, you are surrounded by the pleasant scent of incense.
It is also known as the town where lyricist Yu Aku spent his childhood.
Incense making has been started on Awaji Island for over 160 years.
Incense born from the love of wind and craftsmen.
"In the old days, walking through the town was like a scene from Vega Co.
The scent wafts throughout the town, and it was immediately clear that incense was being made.
There was a scene of many incense sticks drying in back alleys as part of everyday life.
With the advent of mass production, manual work disappeared.
Now, although mainly produced in mass-production factories, traditional handmade incense is consciously preserved as part of the tradition."
Incense sticks have three main roles.
They are "prayer," "healing," and "hospitality."
We want to continue to embed the feelings of caring for someone into our incense making, regardless of how much time or effort it takes.
A gaze that looks at the tradition and future of fragrance.
Fragrance expresses the personality and feelings of each incense shop.
From among many fragrant materials such as agarwood and sandalwood, cinnamon, cloves, fennel, and other Chinese medicinal herbs, we select what is necessary to express the desired scent and blend the fragrances.
Mr. Kiyohachi Koizumi, who continues to preserve traditional techniques of handmade incense with his wife, is a veteran with 50 years of experience in this field.
"I turned the troublesome wind into an ally and made incense.
That is amazing.
The quality of Awaji Island incense is recognized even overseas," says President Yoshii.
Incense manufacturing (handmade craftsmanship).
(1) Fragrance blending and powder kneading.
Various raw materials are put into a kneading machine, mixed with water or hot water to form a dough, then compressed with a pressing machine to create "neridama" (kneaded balls).
(2) Bonyuki (shaping).
The "neridama" is pressed with a mold to extrude into long, thin strands like noodles.
(3) Itamuki (cutting).
The strands are arranged closely together on a board called a banban.
(4) Drying.
After being placed in a drying chamber, they are naturally dried.
