第2次世界大戦後に全面的に近代化され生産された、F4Uコルセアシリーズの集大成といえるF4U-5は、F8F-2最高速度を凌ぐ当時の海軍最高速レシプロ戦闘機でした。
エンジン取り付け位置が前進し、カウリング自体もわずかに大型化しているため、ノーズの長さが強調された外見となりました。
また、機首下面の気化器空気取入口はふたつに分割されたため左右の下側がふくらんだ(おむすび型)正面形となりF4U-5の大きな特徴となりました。
F4U-5Nはレシプロ単座夜間戦闘機で、機体は基本的にF4U-5と同じで最大の相違点は右主翼に装備されたレーダーですが、無線装置が2重になったため垂直尾翼後方に補助アンテナが付き、パイロットの負担軽減のため自動操縦装置を備え、夜間飛行時のパイロットの視界確保のため排気管を防焔式とし、さらにその後ろ上部に防焔板を設置しました。
F4U-5NLは各翼前縁に除氷ゴムブーツを装備、プロペラの前縁と風防に水メタノール液噴射式除氷装置を取り付け、厳寒の北朝鮮に対応させた寒冷地仕様機で、生産機数はF4U-5Nが214機、F4U-5NLが101機でした。
