The F-86 Sabre is a jet fighter developed as a successor to the P-51D Mustang. Its improved version, the F-86F, was powered by the J-47-GE-27 engine with a thrust of 2,760 kg. In addition to six 12.7mm machine guns, it could carry various missiles and bombs under its wings. Furthermore, its armor was strengthened. During production, the leading-edge slats were removed, the wing chord was slightly extended, and boundary layer fences were added to prevent wingtip stall.
These were the F-86F-25 and -35 models.
As a result, the F-86F gained superior maneuverability compared to the MiG-15, achieving great success in the latter half of the Korean War. However, it was later found that combining the chord-extended wing (commonly known as the 6-3 leading edge wing) with leading-edge slats provided better maneuverability at all speeds, so the leading-edge slats were reinstalled.
This is known as the F-86F-40.
The Japan Air Self-Defense Force adopted this F-86F-40 as its main aircraft starting in 1956 (Showa 31). Mitsubishi Heavy Industries also domestically produced this later model with leading-edge slats.
