**■ What is Hasami Ware?**Hasami ware is produced in Hasami Town, Higashisonogi District, Nagasaki Prefecture.
While it is famous as a porcelain production center, the items first fired in Hasami Town around 1580 were actually pottery.
The raw material for pottery is primarily clay, while the raw material for porcelain is primarily stone. Currently, it is difficult to use materials sourced only from each specific region, so clay and stone from Amakusa City, Kumamoto Prefecture, are used.
Modern Arita ware uses these same raw materials. As both originate from Kyushu, Arita ware and Hasami ware are often compared. The main difference lies in whether the clay or stone used is ranked based on how vividly overglaze colors appear.
This is not a matter of the quality of the vessel being good or bad, but rather a difference in the intended purpose and expression of each.
Additionally, Hasami ware is produced through a system of medium-volume production where individual craftsmen specialize in different parts of the process while valuing manual labor, with the entire region collaborating in production and manufacturing.
