**The Traditional Beauty that Adorns Formal Ceremonies**The *sashikakegasa* is a Japanese umbrella that is one size larger than a *bangasa*. Made with about 50 slightly thicker ribs split from raw bamboo and a long bamboo handle, it is primarily used at ceremonies to be held over someone. Japanese handmade paper is applied over the bamboo ribs, and natural linseed oil is applied and dried in the sun to enhance its water resistance. This makes it reliable not only for sun protection but also for use on rainy days.
**To Show Respect for Noble Individuals or the Main Figures of an Event**Umbrellas arrived in Japan from the continent during the Heian period. Umbrellas at that time were sacred objects used for warding off evil spirits and for religious ceremonies, and old paintings depict attendants holding them over noble individuals. Inheriting this history, the *sashikakegasa* is often held over Shinto priests and Buddhist monks who officiate at shrine and temple events, or over brides dressed in traditional Japanese attire. Shinto priests in voluminous vestments or large sumo wrestlers may also hold and use them themselves.
