4人による同時プレイが可能な2D対戦格闘ゲーム。2003年12月にアーケード向けにリリースされたタイトルをPlayStaion2に移植したもので、マルチタップを使って1～4人で対戦が楽しめる。
ゲームモードは、チームプレイ、ジョイントソウル、GGブーストモードなどを用意。チームプレイは、1人で遊ぶ対CPU戦から最大4人による対戦までをサポートしており、2人対2人のタッグ戦、1人対1人対1人対1人のバトルロイヤル、2人対CPUの協力プレイといった、自由な組み合わせで戦える。
ジョイントソウルは2人でチームを組み、チーム内で体力を共有して戦う。自分からの攻撃だけでなく、パートナーの防御も気にかけながら戦うチームワークが重要となる。
また、従来の「ギルティギア」シリーズは、2D対戦格闘で一般的な1つのライン上で戦っていたが、本作では手前と奥の2つのラインを移動しながら戦う2ラインシステムを採用。4人による攻防を、よりテクニカルに活性化させている。
