A delightful offbeat and lyrical portrayal of a heroine studying animal behavior who struggles with clumsiness in both research and romance. The story depicts her life and love journey with honesty and charm.
Niko (Yuko Takeuchi), who is immersed in researching ladybugs at Hiyodori University, still carries a romantic trauma from witnessing a biologically "overly faithful" cheating incident involving Nambara (Seiyo Uchino), an authority in environmental biology, during her study abroad in London. Her naturally shy personality is further exacerbated by this experience. To break out of this situation, she begins to develop feelings for Kenichi (Masaya Kudo), a part-time teacher at the university-affiliated elementary school.
Just as her feelings are developing, Nambara, who has returned to Japan with the accolade of the Crawford Prize, reappears before Niko. His confident storytelling, which unfolds with an almost excessive enthusiasm, makes it clear why screenwriter Mika Omori was awarded the Kuniko Mukoda Award for this work.
The narrative, which oscillates back and forth over a 20-year period from 1987 to 2007, keeps the protagonist and the story constantly on edge, with each return heightening the drama's tension. The dialogue is rich with insightful references not only to academic facts about animals and insects but also to love and human nature, delivered in a rhythmic and thought-provoking manner.
Furthermore, the story includes a social commentary on the reclamation project of Isahaya Bay, demonstrating a remarkable balance between soft and hard elements. Yuko Takeuchi, who excels in romantic comedy, becomes increasingly charming and lovable as time passes. This is a work that invites a thorough and immersive drama experience. (Yuichi Asou)
