The second album from the Tacoma-based artist, "Grim Iconic...(Sadistic Mantra)" is driven by opposing forces: noisy abstraction and tightly composed beats, external anguish and dissolution, internal strength, apathy and catharsis. Gallego cites influences ranging from British documentary filmmaker Adam Curtis to Miles Davis, Demdike Stare, and Oneohtrix Point Never. But what resonates most is Gallego's own distinct sonic identity. J.R.C.G. is a solo project, and the album was conceived and executed primarily in Gallego's home studio. With Seth Manchester as co-producer, Gallego also found strength in opening the project up to others. As evidenced by his production work with The Body, Battles, and Mdou Moctar, Manchester excels at bone-rattling frequencies, and he was a natural fit for Gallego. "Grim Iconic...(Sadistic Mantra)" is, in its entirety, a work of sonic vortexes, beatings, and purification. A sweaty, thrilling auditory adventure that, like a great basement show, leaves you breathless, exhausted, and wanting to do it all over again. Like a great mantra.
