World Grand Prix Road Race. The history of the highest class of motorcycle racing began in 1949. After an era without television broadcasts, race footage began to be recorded sporadically from the 1970s. The 1983 500cc class became a season that would be talked about throughout Grand Prix history.
This season includes footage from two races: the 10th round British Grand Prix and the 12th round San Marino Grand Prix. Unlike other works, this recording allows for a thorough look at the conditions of that era. The numerous interviews included are also not to be missed.
Kenny Roberts, who reached the pinnacle of his career in 1978-79-80 when he began full participation in the World Grand Prix. In contrast, Freddie Spencer made a spot appearance in the 500cc class in 1980, and began full participation in 1982, finishing 3rd in the rankings with 2 wins and 5 podium finishes that year. In this 1983 season, no rider other than these two was able to win.
The race that became a fateful encounter for both was the accident at the 11th round Swedish Grand Prix. On the final lap, Spencer aggressively took the inside line from Roberts, and although both riders went off course, they narrowly managed to return to the track. Spencer was the winner. In an interview before the British Grand Prix, they spoke of their camaraderie as fellow Americans, but a strange tension built up by the final race.
