**Precautions for Use:**

- Be careful to prevent stone fragments from entering your eyes.
Fire-starting tools are often used in period dramas and are a part of Japanese culture.
They are traditional customs for warding off evil and negative spirits.
As a purification tool, fire stones were used in Shinto rituals at shrines, where fire was ignited using a fire drill, and this was simplified into the use of a fire striker with a steel and flint. The fire was then spread onto people or objects to purify them.
Today, striking a fire stone while out and about is widely practiced among geisha, entertainers, artists, those involved in competitions, people in dangerous jobs, and shops wishing for prosperity, as a way to pray for safety and good fortune.
**How to Use the Easy Fire Striker:**
When using as a purification tool to sprinkle onto people or objects, hold the fire stone in your right hand and the fire steel in your left hand.
Gently strike the edge of the fire steel with the corner of the fire stone, sliding it quickly to produce sparks.
If the corner of the fire stone becomes rounded and no sparks fly, carefully file the stone to create a sharp edge.
*Be sure to keep your eyes protected from stone fragments during this process.*
Do not strike the fire stone directly against the steel; instead, rub it like a match to produce sparks with minimal force, which also prevents damage to the tools.
**Proper Use of a Genuine Fire Steel:**
(Quoted from Yoshii Honke HP: https://yosiihonke-hiuchi.jimdo.com/)
Hold the fire striker firmly in your left hand in a nearly horizontal position.
Select the serrated edge of the fire stone and strike it strongly against the edge of the fire steel, sliding it to produce sparks toward the target for purification.
Typically, 2–3 strikes are enough to ward off evil spirits.
While slightly more difficult than igniting with a fire drill, once accustomed, it becomes easy.
If you are left-handed, hold the tools in the opposite manner.
**Igniting with the Fire Stone:**
Strike the fire stone with the fire steel (metal) in your right hand with a quick, firm tap.
The key to producing sparks is to slightly file the serrated part of the fire stone with the edge of the fire steel, making a quick "clack" sound.
Simply hitting the stone against the steel will only chip the stone without producing sparks.
Left-handed users should reverse the grip.
1. Place a small piece of tinder (such as cotton or combustible material) on top of the fire stone.
2. Strike the fire steel against the fire stone to produce sparks that land on the tinder, igniting it.
3. The sparks will ignite and spread across the tinder.
For beginners, place a slightly larger amount of tinder, about 2–3 mm away from the edge of the fire stone, and hold it down with your thumb to prevent movement.
Once sparks land and ignite the tinder, gently blow on the flame to strengthen it.
**To Transfer the Fire to Kindling:**
Once the tinder begins to burn, place the sulfur part of a wooden fire starter (kindling) nearby and blow to transfer the heat, igniting the kindling.
If the sulfur ignites, the process is successful.
**Caution:**
When sulfur ignites, a strong gas is released briefly.
Do not bring your face close to the sulfur during ignition.
This method can be used to light candles, stoves, firewood, or campfires.
