★ Bruno Walter’s Brahms "German Requiem" is available in five live versions ([1] 1950 Stockholm, [2] 1952 Carnegie Hall with New York Philharmonic (NYP), [3] 1952 Rome Italian Radio Symphony, [4] 1953 Edinburgh with Vienna Philharmonic, [5] 1954 Carnegie Hall with NYP), plus a session recording conducted by NYP in December 1954 (Columbia Records at the time). Among fans, the version [4], performed in Edinburgh, is regarded as "the most moving and dramatic performance," and it finally appears on a domestic CD! Moreover, it is in UHQCD!
★ Because the lyrics use the German translation of the Bible, this masterpiece is also called Brahms’ "Matthäus" (St. Matthew), and Walter was fond of this piece. During the 1950/51 season, there was an opportunity to record Brahms’ works with NYP, but it was abandoned due to costs related to soloists and chorus. The live recordings from 1952, mentioned above, are in English ([2]) and Italian ([3]), and the Edinburgh performance in September 1953 ([4]) is in German. Under Walter’s deep, intense, and weighty passion, the Vienna Philharmonic produces powerful and beautiful sound, and Seefried and Fischer-Dieskau sing movingly! Fischer-Dieskau, performing with Walter for the first time, was 28 years old at that time. He recalls in his autobiography rehearsing and receiving guidance from Walter on the piano. The choir formed for the festival is a fine ensemble rooted in British choral tradition. In the second movement, the funeral march, and the sixth movement, "Dies Irae," the orchestra, soloists, and chorus combine to create overwhelming intensity. Listening to this, one can understand why Walter, in his final years, left session recordings with NYP, despite dissatisfaction with "rough chorus and muddled orchestra sound" (from "Bruno Walter ~ The Man Who Saw Paradise in Music~" by Eric Riding & Rebecca Pechefski, translated by Noriya Takahashi, published by Ongaku no Tomo Sha, 2015).
★ The recordings from September 8 and 10, 1953, at the Edinburgh Festival, performed as part of an all-Brahms program (including "Tragic Overture" and "Hovhaness Variations"), are now available on CD for the first time from a tape restored from radio broadcast recordings. Until now, only LPs from the Walter Society in the US, CDs from the WING label, and Andromeda CDs have been available. The Epitagraph release is a CD made from a tape of the broadcast original, making it the first commercial release in Japan! Although some noise remains due to the restoration process, the high-frequency extension, bass richness, and overall clarity are quite good. It is also released in UHQCD, the "ultimate high-quality CD"! Limited edition, so please purchase early.
