At the age of 23 in 1931, he received a Bachelor of Arts degree from Yale University, and in 1932, he studied abroad at the American Academy in Rome on a scholarship. In the same year, he received the Rome Prize in architecture. He was appointed Design Director at Herman Miller and negotiated with Charles and Ray Eames to design furniture for the company. He also released his own representative works, the 'Platform Bench' and 'Coconut Chair'.
