In the future, humans have achieved eternal life by transforming their bodies into machines. Tetsuro, unable to afford a mechanical body, yearns for the Galaxy Express 999, which travels to a planet that offers mechanical bodies for free. Eventually, after his mother is taken by the Mechanical Count, Tetsuro receives a pass for the 999 from the mysterious beauty Metel, and they depart Earth together.
