You can listen to live versions of “Pastoral” and “Fate” from 1992 and 1994. While the interpretations are fundamentally similar, the 1992 version is a controlled, perfected form of performance with a rigorous approach. Conversely, the 1994 version shows increased freedom and a shift toward a more relaxed musicality, reflecting Wand’s evolving style. Although the differences are subtle, comparing these points reveals fascinating insights. The 1992 “Fate” boasts perfect structural beauty, while the 1994 “Pastoral” offers a flowing elegance. Both versions possess irresistible charm and are considered masterpieces filled with Wand’s unique mastery.★ The 1992 “Fate” features sharply defined lines from the opening movement, giving an impression of precision and strength. The finale emphasizes a grounded rhythm. In contrast, the 1994 performance, despite increased detail, emphasizes a flow both vertically and horizontally. The finale’s dynamics are broader, creating a more natural sense of uplift. The horizontal awareness in the 1994 recording becomes clearer in the “Pastoral” Symphony. Meanwhile, the stormy fourth movement’s tempo is faster than in the 1992 version, achieving a more three-dimensional balance. The ensemble is more mature.
