Following the highly acclaimed second release, "Watarase ~ECHO~," this new album continues to explore the important and globally influential Japanese jazz piece, "Watarase," composed by jazz pianist Fumio Itabashi, which sparked the current worldwide Japanese jazz boom. This series comprehensively covers the best of "Watarase," and after the successful first installment, "Watarase ~ECHO~," the latest release, "Watarase ~VOICE~," compiles songs featuring various vocalists who participated in "Watarase."
This release features previously unreleased takes of the renowned "Watarase" by jazz pianist Fumio Itabashi, now gaining recognition worldwide. Curated from the perspective of Motosugi Wakasugi, a pioneer of the Japanese jazz scene, it continues the series following "Watarase ~ECHO~." "Watarase ~VOICE~" focuses on songs centered around voices, mainly unreleased tracks with diverse vocalists participating in "Watarase." The album is scheduled to include performances by jazz vocalist Shigeo Maruyama, folk singer Lee Jung-mi, folk song singer Tomoki Kaneko, and others.
Reflecting on 40 years of history, this series carefully selects "Watarase" recordings that should be heard today, allowing listeners to enjoy a fragment of Fumio Itabashi's life—a masterful expression of the art of jazz that continues to this day.
Now that "Watarase" has become known as "the world's Watarase," the sound carried by river water is gaining attention. To gather and unify these voices, the second installment is titled "VOICE." It focuses on unreleased tracks and the "song version" of "Watarase," featuring:
- Yuki Kaneko, who infuses the music with a Japanese spirit
- Lee Jung-mi, whose version reflects Asian roots
- Self-performed works by Shigeo Maruyama (lyricist)
- Rare recordings with exotic voicings
- The long-awaited complete version (planned) of the masterpiece "Symphonic Poem 'Watarase'," which is the origin of "the world's Watarase" — finally unveiled!
