What is Fugen Bosatsu (ふげんぼさつ)?
Fugen means "wise in all aspects," and is an active Bodhisattva who appears everywhere to save living beings.
Fugen Bosatsu is often depicted in a triad with Monju Bosatsu as the right attendant to Shaka Nyorai, but can also be enshrined alone. Along with Monju Bosatsu's wisdom, Fugen Bosatsu is considered the Bodhisattva who governs practice, playing a role in putting into practice the teachings of Buddhism grasped through clear wisdom. Furthermore, with the spread of the Lotus Sutra, which preaches the salvation of women, Fugen Bosatsu gained much faith among women.
Incidentally, Fugen Enmei Bosatsu, who bestows the benefit of longevity, is derived from Fugen Bosatsu.
Benefits
It is said to offer benefits such as protection for women, protection for practitioners, longevity and freedom from illness, and increased prosperity and happiness. It is also the guardian deity for those born in the Year of the Dragon and the Year of the Snake.
