『フロントミッションオンライン（以下FMO）』は、「フロントミッション1st」と同じく、第ニ次ハフマン紛争を舞台に、プレイヤーが一兵士となって味方勢力と協力し、敵勢力と戦うゲーム。
プレイヤーキャラクターはO.C.U.軍、U.S.N.軍のどちらかに所属し、ハフマン紛争に参戦していく。
戦いに応じて、自軍への功績が上がっていくと軍の中で昇格していき、より戦況に影響する行動を取ることが出来るようになる。
また自分のレベルが上がっていくと、参戦可能なエリアも広がっていき、敵勢力がひしめくエリアで功を上げるチャンスが広がっていく。
●自由度の高いオンライン専用ゲーム
『FMO』はMMORPG（多人数参加型オンラインRPG）ではない。
しかしMMORPGのように仲間を作ってあたかもパーティのように小隊を組みプレイすることもできるし、1人でいろいろな戦場を転戦することもできる。同じ軍のキャラクターは全て仲間。そのため、パーティメンバーを待つことなく戦場に入ることができる。
