常にリアルな世界観をベースに展開する「FRONT MISSION」ストーリー。シリーズ初のPS2版である本作は、『FRONT MISSION 1st』と『FRONT MISSION 2』の間、『1st』のから6年後の2096年の世界が舞台だ。
主人公は、エリート女性ヴァンツァーパイロットのエルザと、元優秀仕官のダリル。この2人がそれぞれ別の場所で体験する事件が、やがて1つの事件に繋がっていく。
このストーリーにはPS版『1st』に登場するキャラクターもからんでくる。「第二次ハフマン紛争」後の、まだ語られていなかった物語の空白部分が語られる。
PlayStation2のスペックにより、ヴァンツァーの動きはより美しくなめらかに描かれている。背景など戦闘シーンの描写は精緻を極め、欠けた機体のひとつひとつまで表現されて、まるで映画を観ているかのような迫力だ。
また、これまでの1対1対戦から、複数機が参加することが可能になったことで、より過激になった戦闘システムにも注目したい。（江口 謙信）
