A historic performance that revolutionized Japanese jazz culture.
The sound source from their first visit to Japan, recorded for a legendary documentary film, has been miraculously unearthed!
●An unreleased live album featuring the legendary jazz band "Art Blakey & The Jazz Messengers," led by the representative modern jazz drummer Art Blakey, from their first visit to Japan in 1961.
●With a powerhouse lineup including Lee Morgan (tp) and Wayne Shorter (ts), this is a blazing performance packed with signature repertoire such as "Moanin'" and "Blues March."
●This was the first full-scale modern jazz group to visit Japan, and it sparked an unprecedented jazz boom across the country, making it a memorial event in Japanese music history. It is said that a soba delivery person was even heard whistling "Moanin'" while riding a bicycle, indicating how their music permeated the general public at the time and greatly contributed to the development of Japanese jazz culture to this day.
●The sound source for this album was recorded for the documentary film "Kuroi Sakuretsu" (Black Explosion), which followed their tour of Japan. However, due to rights issues, the film was shelved, the film was discarded, and the whereabouts of the master tape remained unknown for a long time. In 2017, the tape was discovered among the belongings of a film staff member, and after several years of research and negotiation, a worldwide release by the American Blue Note label was realized.
●The CD booklet includes an interview with Wayne Shorter by Don Was, president of Blue Note Records, as well as interviews with saxophonist Sadao Watanabe and music critic Reiko Yukawa, who were present at the time, and a contribution from Ryuichiro Nemoto, who discovered the tape.
