Shakuhachi prodigy Michihiro Fujiwara, who is carving out a new world for the shakuhachi, and the Stuide String Quartet, led by young Vienna Philharmonic concertmaster Volkharlt Stuide. They met and hit it off when the Stuide String Quartet visited Japan in 2008, and have since performed together in concerts. This recording was made possible by Fujiwara flying to Vienna to bring their relationship, cultivated through repeated collaborations, to fruition in a single work. The concept of this album is to "select and record famous classical and contemporary pieces from both Japan and Europe." Michiru Oshima was in charge of the arrangements. Eastern and Western music, born from completely different musical values and theories. By juxtaposing them within a single album and weaving their sounds through an ensemble created by the new encounter of Japanese instruments (shakuhachi) and string quartet, the differences between them, or the mental commonalities hidden within, are brought to light in a very interesting way. Furthermore, Michihiro Fujiwara and Michiru Oshima have each written and provided two original pieces for shakuhachi + string quartet for this album.
