About 10 years younger than Villa-Lobos, and trusted by Villa-Lobos as his right-hand man, composer Oscar Lorenzo Fernandez. Due to his untimely death at the age of 50, many Brazilian music researchers lament, "If only he had lived longer...". He left many masterpieces in piano pieces and songs, and just before his death, he completed two symphonies. One of his orchestral works that made his name known worldwide is the final movement "Batuque" of the Reisado do Pastoreio Suite recorded on this album. It's an exciting rhythm and color, and an exciting crescendo that captivates you at first listen!

Like many Brazilian composers active in the 20th century, Fernandez started with a nationalist style and attempted to integrate it with international techniques and styles. The "Reisado do Pastoreio" Suite is a representative work of his early nationalist period. It is accessible music with a Christmas motif, and the 3rd movement "Batuque," which is particularly easy to remember and catchy, is a standard in collections of Brazilian orchestral masterpieces. It was performed to great acclaim at the 200th Anniversary of Brazilian Independence Concert held in Tokyo in 2022. Symphony No. 1 is a powerful four-movement work written under the influence of Bartok. While aiming for pure music with a classical structure, Brazilian rhythms and melodies appear throughout. Symphony No. 2, which depicts an adventurer entering the jungle in search of emeralds and facing the threats of indigenous people and nature, is a dramatic work with a strong programmatic character. The composer passed away without hearing its premiere.
