Oscar Lorenzo Fernandez, about 10 years younger than Villa-Lobos, was a composer whom Villa-Lobos trusted as if he were his right arm. Due to his early death at age 50, there are many researchers of Brazilian music who lament, "If he had lived longer..." He left many masterpieces in piano music and songs, and just before his death composed two symphonies, but one of the orchestral works that made his name known worldwide is the "Batuque" from the final movement of the Reisado do Pastoreio Suite ("Festival of the Three Wise Men of the Countryside") included in this album. Its captivating rhythm and colors, and exciting crescendo immediately attract the listener!-- Yusuke Kiyomoto (Conductor / President of the Japan Villa-Lobos Association)
Like many Brazilian composers active in the 20th century, Fernandez started with a nationalist style and attempted to integrate it with international techniques and styles. The "Festival of the Three Wise Men of the Countryside" suite is a representative work of his early nationalist phase. It features friendly music themed around Christmas, especially the easy-to-remember and lively third piece "Batuque," which is a staple in Brazilian orchestral music collections. It was also performed and acclaimed at the Brazil Independence 200th Anniversary concert held in Tokyo in 2022. Symphony No. 1 is a powerful four-movement work influenced by Bartók. While aiming for pure music with a classical structure, it also features rhythms and melodies characteristic of Brazil. Symphony No. 2, depicting an adventurer entering the jungle seeking emeralds and facing threats from indigenous people and nature, has a strong programmatic character and is a dramatic work. The composer passed away before hearing its premiere.
*The domestic edition includes a Japanese commentary by Yusuke Kiyomoto (conductor / President of the Japan Villa-Lobos Association).
