In the mid-1980s, following a collapse in the international sugar market, famine occurred on Negros Island. In response, initiatives such as "People's Trade" began, promoting products like muscovado sugar (brown sugar) and Balangon bananas to support the self-reliance of the people of Negros Island.
Subsequently, a cooperative network expanded to include products like eco-shrimp from Indonesia, coffee from East Timor, and olive oil from Palestine.
