About the artist
*Georges Georgescu (1887-1964) was a leading Romanian conductor who served as music director of the Georges Enescu Philharmonic from 1920 to 1944 and again from 1954 to 1964. From 1918 to 1920, he directly studied under Arthur Nikisch as deputy conductor of the Gewandhaus Orchestra. Influenced by Nikisch, he shared a classical style of placing the violin on both wings, similar to Boult, and was a giant of his era. The studio recordings from 1961 to 1962, during a time when Romania was under Soviet protection but not all recordings had transitioned to stereo even in the USSR, are remarkable for their high-quality stereo sound. Although there was a DANTE/LYS CD of this complete set, it was a transfer from a commercial LP, and in 2012, our company first officially released the master tapes on CD (ERT1001 discontinued), which received a great response. Since it has been out of stock for a long time, we have revisited the master tapes, remastered, and restored the sound quality to UHQCD. Georgescu's performances are characterized by super-fast tempi comparable to Kleeber, especially in works like "Pastoral," with expressive singing and clear rhythm. Everything is brisk and engaging. Enescu Philharmonic also has a nostalgic, rustic tone, with woodwind sounds that touch the heart. The "Choral" Symphony is sung in Romanian. For those interested in research, the revisions of the score, reminiscent of Mengelberg, are also intriguing.
