erakko is a brand launched by the second-generation craftsman of Shibata Lacquerware Studio, which is based in Yamashina, Kyoto, with the desire to create travel gear. All processes, from wood preparation to lacquer finishing, are done in-house.
The "Otomowan" (companion bowl) from erakko was born from the desire to accompany you with natural material tableware during precious times spent outdoors, such as travel and camping. It is a high-quality product designed not only to savor the natural materials of wood and lacquer but also with features specifically for outdoor use.
Various types of wood, such as maple, zelkova, wild cherry, and walnut, are used for the body of the Otomowan, with a focus on bringing out the unique characteristics of each. To highlight the color and grain of the wood, different types of lacquer are used for the "fuki-urushi" (wiped lacquer) finish depending on the wood species.
The Otomowan does not have a raised base, known as "kodai." This is to lower the center of gravity and make it more stable and less likely to tip over when used outdoors. With its ultimate simplicity and soft, gentle curves, it is a bowl you will want to cradle in both hands forever.
It is finished with "fuki-urushi," which can be considered the origin of many lacquerware techniques. The greatest characteristic of fuki-urushi is that the wood grain shows through, allowing you to enjoy the texture of the wood. It is a luxurious and time-consuming technique where the lacquer is repeatedly applied, wiped off, and dried to create a thin yet durable coating.
The Otomowan is designed to fit as a pair inside standard cylindrical cooksets. (※The size of cylindrical cooksets varies slightly by manufacturer. Please check the size of your cookset just in case.) By storing it wrapped in the included furoshiki (wrapping cloth), your cookset will be protected even when placed in a packed backpack, allowing for worry-free transport.
The wood grain of wild cherry has a beautiful pattern of overlapping dark brown with a golden hue, giving it an elegant feel amidst its rustic charm. The natural brown fuki-urushi finish is a balanced color that suits any occasion.
