At the very top, on the skin surface, is the sebum film. In healthy skin, this sebum film’s barrier function always works to maintain moisture and elasticity, protect against external stimuli, and create a foundation for normal skin renewal (turnover).

Among the components that make up this sebum film, about 20% to 30% are “Wax Esters.” They are the second most abundant after glycerol compounds and fatty acids.

The main component of jojoba oil is also a liquid “Wax Ester.” This is why it is said to be similar to human sebum. Among natural oils, jojoba oil contains an exceptionally high amount of wax esters. It can be considered a rare substance capable of supplementing the function of sebum.
