【Overview】
During the Meiji Restoration, a historic event took place—the Boshin War—at Shibata Domain (present-day Shibata City, Niigata Prefecture). Based on the episode of betrayal against the Ōuetsu Alliance Army—an act of treachery against the former shogunate army—scriptwriter Kazuo Kasahara, known for works such as the "Battles Without Honor and Humanity" series (1973), created a story where罪人 (criminals) are designated as "Kesshitai" (suicide squad) to defend Shibata Domain's fortress.

This masterful script was used as the basis for the production team of the iconic Heisei yakuza film "Kokoro no Chi" (Blood of the Lone Wolf), directed by Kazuya Shiraishi, which, after 60 years, was reborn as a new group conflict drama by Toei.

The major project features dual leads: Takayuki Yamada and Taiga Nakano. An ensemble cast of unique and豪華 (luxurious) actors has gathered! It is a story of betrayal and internal conflict that keeps viewers on edge at every moment. The fierce battles confronting fate ignite a rebellious spirit deep within the Japanese people!!

【Story】
Mizoguchi Naizo, the castle elder of Shibata Domain in Niigata, was at his wit's end. As the Boshin War, which divided Japan into two, intensified, Shibata Domain secretly plotted to defect to the new government army. However, the Ōuetsu Alliance Army, loyal to the old shogunate, had arrived at the castle demanding to march against the new government forces.

As the arrival of the new government army drew near, the alliance army refused to leave the castle, and the approaching government forces would inevitably clash with them. Shibata was on the brink of war—an absolutely desperate situation!

With no time to spare, Mizoguchi devised a plan and ordered a "Fortress Defense Operation" as a last-ditch effort to halt the advance of the government forces. The group assembled consisted of ten罪人 (criminals)—people who had been imprisoned for crimes outside of human decency, such as murder, gambling, arson, illegal boarding, and adultery—who were sentenced to death.

Their overwhelming disadvantage was that their mission was simply to【prevent the government army from invading the fortress】. For these condemned men, the hope of "living" was all they could see. Believing in the promise of "exoneration if they win," the罪人 (criminals) pushed forward for their own sake.

Will they be able to seize their future?! Amidst the tangled motives of Shibata Domain, the alliance army, and the new government forces, each with their own pride and desire to protect loved ones left behind in their hometowns—the story of eleven people's intense battles begins, echoing with relentless passion.
