EF58 66 - KATO Electric Locomotive

■EF58 locomotive 66: While KATO released a product of the exact same locomotive last year (2025), this is a custom-painted model that was repainted from the "Blue Emperor" color, large window, and visor type. The reason it is a custom-painted model is that the ladder next to the car body entrance/exit doors lacks the recessed step. EF58 locomotive 66, along with locomotive 61, was a popular model, active on the Kisei and Hanwa Lines until the end of the JNR era, maintaining a style close to the original with large windows and a visor until its retirement. However, the visor on locomotive 66 was attached in the late 1950s for temporary operations on the Joetsu Line during its time at the Tokyo Locomotive Depot. During the "Blue Emperor" color period, it was simply a large window locomotive without a visor. Visors were attached to locomotives belonging to Nagaoka and Takasaki, which were stationed on the Joetsu Line, and to specific locomotives at the Tokyo Locomotive Depot that were assigned temporary operations during peak periods on the Joetsu Line. Locomotive 47, which has a similar appearance, was initially assigned to the Joetsu Line, where a visor was attached. It was then traded with EF57 during the full electrification of the Tokaido Line, moved down from the mountains, and became "Blue Emperor" colored with the visor still attached. The visor was essential equipment to cut icicles formed inside tunnels on the Joetsu Line to protect the windows, and locomotives on the Tokaido and Sanyo Lines with visors were proof that they had come from the Joetsu Line. In later years, with the conversion to H rubber windows, visors were often removed from Tokaido and Sanyo Line locomotives as they were no longer necessary. However, locomotive 66, perhaps due to continued anticipated operations on the Joetsu Line, retained its visor until its scrapping. It is said that the visor of locomotive 66 was useful due to the strong sunlight along the Pacific coast where its final home, the Kisei Line, runs.
