Echizen lacquerware, the highest quality wooden lacquered rice bowl.
Finished elegantly with a taru-nuri (lacquer with a slightly translucent, amber-like appearance).
It is shallower than a soup bowl, with a larger opening diameter, making it easy to use chopsticks.
It may seem a bit luxurious, but it is less likely to break and easy to care for.
Above all, the taste of the rice is different.
Echizen lacquerware has a history of 1500 years.
It all started when lacquerware craftsmen, ordered by the emperor of the 6th century to recoat his crown, presented black lacquered tableware, and the emperor was deeply impressed by its luster and encouraged its production.
A characteristic of the production area is that the woodturning of the base is done by standing the wood vertically.
The finishing technique is called hana-nuri, where lacquer is applied directly after brushing to prevent brush marks and dust, and then dried naturally.
Echizen lacquerware has been designated as a traditional craft by the Ministry of International Trade and Industry.
Even though it is a lacquered bowl, handling is simple.
Gently wash with a neutral detergent, wipe with a soft cloth to remove moisture, and then let it dry naturally.
(※ Microwave ovens, dishwashers, etc. are not allowed)
Size approximately φ11.8×5.5cm (per piece)
Specifications: wooden, honkiji (base layer), lacquered, hand-painted
What is honkiji (base layer)?
It is a traditional technique for the base of lacquerware, where powder such as ground oyster shell (tonoko) is kneaded with clay-like consistency, mixed with lacquer, and applied.
