Echizen lacquerware has a history of 1500 years.
It all started when lacquer craftsmen, ordered by the emperor of the 6th century to recoat his crown, presented black lacquerware, and its remarkable gloss deeply impressed him, encouraging its production.
A characteristic of the region is that the woodturning of the base is done by standing the wood vertically.
The finishing technique features a flower lacquer method where lacquer is applied directly without brush marks or dust, and dried as is.
Echizen lacquerware has been designated as a traditional craft by the Ministry of International Trade and Industry.
