A Toso set is a vessel used on New Year's morning to drink Toso while praying for the health and longevity of the family.
Toso refers to a medicinal sake drunk during the New Year to ward off evil spirits for the year and to pray for longevity.
Since ancient times, it has been said that "if one person drinks this, the whole family will be free from illness, and if the whole family drinks this, the entire neighborhood will be free from illness," making it an indispensable part of the New Year's celebratory meal. It is made by soaking Tososan, a combination of several types of medicinal herbs, in a mixture of sake, mirin, and sugar.
Nowadays, many households simply use sake as Toso.
It is customary for the family to gather around the celebratory table on New Year's morning, exchange New Year's greetings, and then drink Toso in order from the youngest to the oldest, praying for good health.
Formally, a set of three stacked cups is used; one person drinks from each of the three cups starting from the top before passing them to the next person.
This drinking method is said to mean that "the elders receive the youth and energy of the younger ones who drink first, allowing them to live longer."
It is also acceptable to prepare other cups so that the family can toast together.
Furthermore, those who cannot drink alcohol or children may simply touch the cup to their lips and pretend to drink.
Additionally, it can be used as a luxurious sake set when serving alcohol during the New Year.
Echizen lacquerware has a history of 1,500 years.
It began in the 6th century when a lacquer craftsman, ordered by the Emperor of the time to recoat a crown, presented black-lacquered tableware. The Emperor was deeply impressed by its magnificent luster and encouraged its production.
A characteristic of this production area is that the woodturning is done by cutting the wood vertically (Tachiki-biki).
The lacquering is characterized by the "Hana-nuri" technique, where the final coat of lacquer is applied and allowed to dry as is, ensuring no brush marks or dust remain.
Echizen lacquerware is designated as a traditional craft by the Ministry of International Trade and Industry.
