This is a high-quality Toso-ki from Echizen Lacquerware.
A Toso-ki is a vessel used to drink Toso on New Year's Day morning, wishing for the family's good health and well-being.
Toso is a medicinal sake drunk during the New Year to ward off evil spirits for the year and wish for longevity.
It has long been said that "if one person drinks this, the family will be free from illness, and if the whole family drinks it, the whole region will be free from illness," making it an indispensable part of the New Year's celebratory meal. It is made by steeping Toso-san, a combination of several medicinal herbs, in Japanese sake with mirin and sugar added.
Nowadays, many households use it to hold Japanese sake and drink it as Toso.
On New Year's Day morning, after the family gathers around the celebratory meal and exchanges New Year's greetings, it is customary to drink Toso in order from the youngest to the oldest, wishing for good health.
Formally, three stacked cups are used, and one person drinks from the cups in order from the top, then passes them on.
This way of drinking is said to convey the idea that "the elders receive the youth and vitality of the younger drinkers, thereby living longer."
You may also prepare other cups and have the family toast simultaneously.
Also, those who cannot drink alcohol or children can put their lips to the cup and pretend to drink.
It can also be used as luxurious sake ware when drinking alcohol during the New Year.
Echizen Lacquerware has a history of 1500 years.
It began in the 6th century when a lacquerware craftsman was ordered by the Emperor of the time to repaint his crown. Upon presenting black lacquered tableware, the Emperor was deeply impressed by its exquisite luster and encouraged its production.
As a characteristic of the production area, the wood turning is done by cutting the wood in the vertical direction.
The coating is characterized by the Hana-nuri technique, where the finishing lacquer is applied and dried as is, without brush marks or dust.
Echizen Lacquerware is designated as a traditional craft by the Ministry of International Trade and Industry.
