＜Origin＞
Ebony, sandalwood, and ironwood are called the three major fragrant woods of Chinese origin.
These high-quality materials historically entered Japan via China (Tang Dynasty).
＜Production Area＞
Originally, Southeast Asia was the main source, but currently, Africa is the primary source, with striped black ebony (brown and black stripes) being the most common.
Due to the impact of logging the completely black ebony, this is a precious material that is expected to become scarce in the near future.
＜Features＞
- Extremely heavy and hard wood, making processing very difficult.
- Excellent durability.
- As a rare wood, it develops a luster the more it is used.
- The beautiful grain stands out against the solid black background.
＜Color Tone＞
The outer wood (edge wood) has a pale red hue, while the heartwood alternates between black and pale red, creating striped patterns. Occasionally, completely black specimens are found, called "true black ebony" or "Maguro" (meaning "black" in Japanese). Striped specimens with figure patterns are called striped ebony (Shima Koku-tan), also known in English as Macassar Ebony.
