The Mitsubishi F-2 is a support fighter jet for the Japan Air Self-Defense Force (JASDF). This aircraft comes in a single-seat A model and a two-seat B model, with the two-seat version primarily used for training.
The JASDF has historically defended against threats such as enemy fighters and bombers with the F-15J interceptor fighter, and against threats such as ships and tanks with the F-1 support fighter. The F-2 is the successor to the F-1, developed jointly by Japan and the United States.
Originally known as the FS-X during its development, this aircraft is based on the F-16 and designed using the latest technologies. Its external features include a fuselage and wings that are slightly larger than the F-16, a larger radome to accommodate a new radar, and a three-piece canopy designed to cope with bird strikes during low-altitude flight. Carbon composite materials, which Japan proudly offers to the world, are used in various parts of the airframe, such as the wings, reducing the aircraft's weight.
In addition, CCV technology, reflecting the experimental results of the T-2 CCV aircraft, has been introduced, and the fly-by-wire side-stick, a first for JASDF aircraft, has been adopted, achieving safe and excellent flight performance.
