"Giselle," renowned as a masterpiece of romantic ballet, has been popular since its premiere in 1841 for its refined stylistic beauty and dramatic storyline of a betrayed lover's forgiveness by the spirits of dead maidens. This production is based on Marius Petipa's choreography, with modern updates through additional choreography by Rachel Beaujan and Ricardo Bustamante. The contrast between the first act, dominated by steps that ground the dancers as if confirming their earthly existence, and the second act, where Giselle and the Wilis (spirits) dance with a sense of weightlessness, is exquisite. The lead roles are performed by Olga Smirnova, a former prima ballerina of the Bolshoi Ballet who left Russia following the invasion of Ukraine and joined the Dutch National Ballet, and Italian dancer Jacopo Tissi, who also danced with Smirnova at the Bolshoi. Their solos and their perfectly synchronized duets are the highlights of this performance. Furthermore, the Dutch Ballet Orchestra, led by the master of ballet music Ermanno Florio, familiar to Japanese audiences from performances by the American Ballet Theatre and guest appearances with the National Ballet of Japan, supports the dancers' steps while vibrantly performing Adolphe Adam's music, full of fantasy.
