The Sorax Pattern is an effective fly, especially for match-the-hatch fishing. Newly emerged mayfly duns, for example, have short legs, and may drift with the lower half of the hackle cut off.
This fly does not have high buoyancy, so it is not suitable for upstream fishing, but it is often useful for pinpoint rise targeting. This pattern was introduced in Vincent Marinaro's 1950 book, "A Modern Dry Fly Code."
Whereas standard flies have hackles wound closer to the head, the Sorax Pattern is wound in a Palmer style closer to the middle of the shank, and typically the lower half of the hackle is cut off for use. It is a particularly effective fly for match-the-hatch fishing.
Newly emerged mayfly duns, for example, have short legs, and many drift in this manner.
However, due to its weak buoyancy in fast-flowing headwaters, it is rarely used except in special cases. This fly is often useful in slow currents and flat pools.
