<About Mucha Chachan>

- Building a relationship between agriculture and people starting from mandarin oranges

In 1974, when the nationwide production of Wenshu mandarins peaked and began to become excessive, concerned about the future of local agriculture and questioning the heavy use of pesticides and chemical substances in citrus cultivation, successors of mandarin farmers borrowed a 15-are (approximately 0.15 hectares) Iyo mandarin orchard to experiment with pesticide-free cultivation during the growing period. This was the beginning of Mucha Chachan.

The start of Mucha Chachan was “growing mandarins without relying on pesticides or chemical fertilizers,” which remains the fundamental principle today.

Currently, the cultivation area with cooperating farmers in Akahama Town exceeds 100 hectares. They are expanding organic farming and working on regional development that leverages the mountains and sea.

Furthermore, by scaling up organic agriculture, they aim to build a new kind of farming system where young people can root themselves in the community and live sustainably.

- Making the most of the favorable terrain, maintaining as natural a environment as possible

In Akahama Town, Nishi Iyo City, Ehime Prefecture, facing the Uwa Sea to the south, blessed with a warm climate.

Beyond the Nofuku Tunnel at the entrance, you can enjoy a panoramic view of the Uwa Sea, the village, and steep mandarin orchards.

The terraced fields made of limestone shine white under the sun, illuminating the surrounding trees.

The soil drains well and is rich in minerals carried by the sea breeze, creating ideal natural conditions for delicious mandarins.

Under this environment blessed by nature, following a cultivation policy that is “gentle on both people and nature,” over 80 farmers are currently engaged in mandarin cultivation at Mucha Chachan.

Mandarins bear fruit only once a year.

Even if pesticides are used when unavoidable, efforts are made to minimize their use throughout the year-long cultivation period.

- Mucha Chachan’s cultivation policy

● No use of herbicides or chemical fertilizers.

● Starting with zero pesticides, minimizing the number of applications as much as possible.

● When pests or diseases occur, first respond with natural, organic-compatible pesticides (※1).

● Only when uncontrollable abnormalities occur, use pesticides outside organic standards at the minimum necessary level (※2).

(※1) Pesticides permitted under Japanese Agricultural Standards (JAS) for organic cultivation.

(※2) In typical citrus cultivation in Ehime Prefecture, 18 applications are recommended.
