Magnolia wood (Hoonoki) is hard, making it suitable for crafts such as the teeth of geta (Hoonoki geta). It is also water-resistant and pleasant to the touch, so it has been used for the handles of Japanese knives and cutting boards. Because it has little resin and is easy to work with, it is also used for the scabbards of Japanese swords.

The Inro is famous from the story of Mito Komon.
It is three-tiered and hollow inside, so it can hold small items such as medicine.

The gourd-shaped *ojime* (cord fastener) has a shape that widens towards the bottom, which has been considered a very auspicious shape since ancient times.
