Following "Concertos for Violin, Piano and Strings" (ORFEO-761092) composed in his early teens, this album features all the symphonias written by the prodigy Mendelssohn between the ages of 12 and 14. The Stuttgart Chamber Orchestra is a prestigious ensemble, established in 1945 by Karl Münchinger, with a history spanning over half a century. Initially focusing on the performance of J.S. Bach, they later expanded their repertoire to include the Viennese Classical period, and in recent years have extended to works by Glass and Gubaidulina, known as one of the world's leading elite chamber orchestras. Michael Hofstetter, born in Munich, became Chief Conductor in September 2006, succeeding Dennis Russell Davies. He began his career as Kapellmeister at the Wiesbaden Theatre and General Music Director at the Gießen Theatre. Through opera performances such as Handel's "Alcina" and "Giulio Cesare," Hofstetter has already been recognized as a specialist in Baroque music and an expert in authentic style performance. In 2008, Hofstetter and the Stuttgart Chamber Orchestra received the European Chamber Music Award in recognition of their activities. Mendelssohn, who was greatly influenced by Mozart, the "original prodigy," and the music of his era, has symphonias that clearly show this influence. Given Hofstetter and the Stuttgart Chamber Orchestra's background, these are precisely the works they excel at. And what freshness can be heard here!
