All manufacturing is done in domestic factories. DHA & EPA, known as "smoothness components" of blue-backed fish, are essential fatty acids abundant in tuna, bonito, sardines, and other fish. They cannot be sufficiently produced within the body. The recommended daily intake of "n-3 fatty acids" such as DHA & EPA is 2.0g or more for adult men and 1.6g or more for adult women*1. To obtain this amount from DHA in tuna alone would be equivalent to over 14 servings of sashimi*2.
The amount of fish and shellfish consumed daily by Japanese people has decreased, and in 2006, the intake of fish/shellfish and meat reversed. DHA & EPA are components that are likely to be deficient not only for those who dislike fish or tend to have a meat-centered diet, but for everyone in modern times.

What are Foods with Function Claims?
Until now, foods that could display their functions were limited to "Foods for Specified Health Uses (FOSHU)" individually approved by the government, and "Nutrient Function Claims" that meet national standards. Therefore, the "Food with Function Claims" system was introduced with the aim of increasing the options for consumers to make informed choices by clearly displaying the functions of products.
Foods with Function Claims are foods that display functions based on scientific evidence, at the responsibility of the business operator. Information regarding safety and the basis for functionality must be submitted to and accepted by the Secretary of the Consumer Affairs Agency before sale, after which they can be sold as "Foods with Function Claims." However, unlike Foods for Specified Health Uses, they are not individually approved by the Secretary of the Consumer Affairs Agency.
