★ INA (French National Audiovisual Institute) licensed the sound sources and produced this CD with ALTUS’s dedicated mastering. It captures a concert by Cluytens and the Paris Conservatory in one day. Debussy’s two pieces have no official recordings by Cluytens, and especially 《Chosen Maiden》 is believed to be their first recording, making it a valuable source! Ravel’s works are also interesting to compare with previously released performances. The rich colors of each instrument and the intense excitement unique to live performances are present, with moments reminiscent of Munch. Despite being mono, the meticulous mastering brings out the full resonance of that era.
★ Soprano Janine Micho is a specialist in French music who studied at the Paris Conservatory. 《Chosen Maiden》 is one of her specialties, and her beautiful singing captures the essence of the piece perfectly. The work features two roles: the “Narrator” and “Chosen Maiden” (and female chorus), but it is arranged so that one person can sing all parts, with Micho singing all the solo sections.
★ The “La Valse” performance is lively and full of vigor, very much like a live recording. The unique timbres of the strings and wind instruments are enjoyable, and the final intense accelerations are characteristic of a one-shot performance. Cluytens’s conducting in the Japanese tour of Berlioz’s Symphonie Fantastique also comes to mind, where he pushed the orchestra to the brink of collapse. ~ From the commentary by Naoya Hirabayashi
