The Switch Hitter floats quickly, allowing for easy targeting of shallow areas like rivers, surf, rocky shores, and tidal flats, as well as just below the water surface. Its casting distance rivals that of jigs, bringing distant boils that are out of reach for minnows within range. It is effective for various patterns including gizzard shad, falling ayu, sardine, young mullet, and sand lance. The action is sensitive to currents, producing an irregular slalom with a large wavelength, similar to an S-curve. Subtle changes in the current cause it to slide and wobble, automatically creating "feeding opportunities." Its unique high-pitch action and bulky silhouette appeal to seabass scattered over a wide area, making it ideal as a search bait. Operation is simple: just slow retrieve with a steady retrieve, regardless of the time of day. When fishing in highly pressured, competitive fields, upstream casting is recommended over down-cross casting. The trick is to trace the lure as if it were a small baitfish being swept towards the seabass from a diagonal front. Despite being a sinking pencil, it also allows for vertical targeting, falling with a gentle wobble in a horizontal posture.
