The surface of the filter media is smooth, but as it becomes accustomed to the water, a slimy film similar to limescale will develop on the surface, and bacteria will attach to this slime.
It looks like dirt, but it is a habitat (colony) for bacteria.
After introduction, the fluidized bed filter media may not move much until it becomes accustomed to the water, but once a slimy film forms on the surface, it will gradually start moving with the air bubbles.
