『クオレ』というのは、イタリア語で「心」とか「愛」とかいう意味のことばです。この作品は、19世紀後半の北イタリアに住む、エンリーコという小学4年生のひとりの少年が、1年間の学校生活のあいだに見たりきいたりした、人生と社会のいろいろな問題を日記につづるという形式をとっていて、それに毎月1回先生がお話ししてくださる物語を書きくわえてできあがっています。人間は心の弱いもので、いろいろなあやまちをおかしがちですが、いつ、どんな時代にあっても、世の中をしあわせにするものは、愛よりほかにないということを、しっかりと心にきざみつけていただければ幸いです。
